MADELINE ISLAND RADIO HOUR
Volume 1 - Features the "Lake Effect Players" in a radio drama about a young family visiting the Island For the first time. Musical Guest the "Ditch Surfers" (Surf Rock in a winter show), and they are joined by our own local tuba player, Jerry. A little lake poetry, archives from the future, the State of the Island Address by our then Town Chair, Readers Theater grades K-2, and articles from the small town news publication "The Gazette". "Every small town has a popular paper, not that we don't know what everyone is doing, we just get the paper to find out who got caught." This show was recorded in front of a live audience at the Bell Street on Madeline.
Volume 2 - Features a live concert on Madeline with 60's rock and roll icon Bobby Vee, where he is heard to say while performing in the historical museum, "What an appropriate place for me to be playing my songs." A radio drama with a cast of old salts and some youngsters about fisherboys finding more than fish on their first haul without an elder. An essay from Howie Dallin, a writer, producer and educator making his home on Madeline, and an actual letter of complaint sent to Madeline.
Volume 3 - Musical guest "Chance" Ed Willet on cello, and Cheryl Leah. One of the only Cello voice duets in the world, they enchanted us with their music and stories on a beautiful Madeline summer night. Chance has had their music featured on Northern Exposure. This show introduces Donna Askme, a year round resident that takes calls about our Island from tourists. She is quite helpful at times. This show also debuts a portion of chapter 1 of "Superior Passage", a sea adventure written by Islander Captain Richard Thomas Coleman.
Volume 4 - A radio history drama about the foundering of the sailing schooner "Lucerne" permanently lying just a mile south of Madeline near the shores of Long Island. Our "Lake Effect Players" respectfully take you on board during her final moment where all lives are lost. A compelling drama and story. Musical guest Debra Lynn is joined by her husband Howie and daughter Ginger, accompanied by the musical talents of Sheri Milburn. And the Donna Askme Show debuts her first live appearance revealing some of her affections for the wind sled winter transportation system and leaves the audience in tears of laughter. Finally, the debut of "Mingling with Madeline" our form of a trivia show. Recorded live at the Bell Street
Volume 5 - From the woods in front of the studio, the "Voice" of Madeline Island Radio Hour welcomes our listeners through the calls of the spring "peepers". Donna stops by and another excerpt of "Superior Passage" hits the airways. Grades K-2 perform another episode of Readers Theater, and our musical guest Barb With performs live at the U.C.C. church.
Volume 6 - Musical guest Ric and Ben Gillman along with the percussion of Amy Bailey. The "Lake Effect Players" take you inside a community planning committee as only can result on the Island. They also take into the past where Judge Bell and the Hermit Wilson lay down the namesakes for history. Donna Askme answers more questions and Mrs. Huber wins the limerick contest. Recorded live at the La Pointe Elementary school.
Volume 7 - Recorded and broadcast live in Grand Marais, MN on Community Public Radio 90.7FM WTIP. The "Lake Effect Players" shop at a converted border patrol facility called "Rove Mart". Marina Lachecki speaks to our connections through the waters of Superior and is joined by her husband Jim Kasperson for Superior Music. Donna Askme teams up with her cousin from the Gunflint Trail, Shirley Tellme. Hosted by Grand Marais' own Kristy Johnson, fabulous prizes to Cynthia for winning the quiz and capped wonderfully with the music of local musicians "Rod and Real"
Volume 8 - The Best of, excerpts from all of the shows
Volume 9 - Readers Theater Grades 3-5 (La Pointe Elementary), A round table discussion about the newly published Madeline Island ABC Book, great folk music by musical guests BLT, and Donna Askme ponders and discusses the question, when does one become an islander.
Volume 10 - Schedule for release in March. Dedicated to Don Pavel, featuring golden moments of his music from several past gigs on Madeline Island. Lake Effect Players, Donna Askme and interviews will round out the show.
Volume 11 - A live recording for broadcast on July 6th on Madeline Island. The" Lake Affected", Donna Askme, Mingling, Host Marylin Hartig, and special musical guest. More details to be posted, but come tho the Island for the 4th and make this a part of your visit.
